In the small close-knit farming community of Boort in Northern Central Victoria, lies a two acre garden that abounds with the most unusual sculptures. All are made from spanners, mostly old ones and many have been sourced from across the globe. Every sculpture is made from welded spanners which its creator did from his wheel chair.
John Piccoli was a third-generation farmer who upon retirement, needed a diversion. He set about making unusual sculptures from all of the old spanners in his shed. His sense of perspective was so good, that in a very short time the word had spread and John was urged to open his creative works to the public.
This collection is made even more remarkable by understanding that John had contracted polio as a child and that he carried out farming and artistry from his wheel chair. A good friend tells of John lying on his back in the dirt in order to weld some of his sculptures. John recently passed away but his wife continues to keep the property and its one hundred sculptures open to the public.
Some 10,000 visitors per year now come through the property to view the magical artistry of the man they so affectionately call "The Spanner Man"
